A document of its era. Material evidence with all the people involved. A must-read.

Remember, I once wrote about a guy who got into a clash with some crooked police officers in Ramenskoye over their illegal seizure of land? He had documents and the law on his side and really cornered them, while they leaned on brute force and a lawless local judge. They locked him up for a full 30 days.

He called for backup — the guys from “Movement” — and they too were immediately detained and thrown in jail. Even by today’s standards, the case involved so many violations that the media wrote about it. To no avail: the people were not released.

And here’s what happened. The guy’s name is Yan Katelevsky, and when he was detained, they took away his phone so he couldn’t film or take pictures. But the phone was already running in voice recorder mode and kept recording the whole time — first somewhere in the police officers’ hands, and then in the judge’s office. She simply put it down on the table (even though it was evidence!).

So now we have a chance to hear the inner workings of an unlawful arrest.

Here is the recording in all its vivid detail, with full commentary:

And here is Mediazona’s transcript of the most interesting parts:

“You Can’t Live by the Laws of the Russian Federation,” or The Adventures of a Voice Recorder in the Ramenskoye Police Station and City Court.

There is more than enough direct evidence here not only to get both the judge and the cops fired, but also to open criminal cases against them.

We’ll see what comes of it. That, too, will be a document of its era.
