Last week, Quartz published an article about how the Yakunin family is trying to launder its reputation. It turned out they hired the most expensive British lawyers and PR consultants to better hide their foreign assets. Guess from whom? The FSB (Russia’s security service)? The Investigative Committee? The Prosecutor’s Office? No, no, and no. The terms of reference stated in black and white that the assets had to be hidden from Alexei Navalny and the Anti-Corruption Foundation.
On the one hand, that is, of course, almost flattering, but on the other—just think about what is happening in the country if the main threat to corrupt officials is not the law enforcement system, but a small nonprofit organization. Obviously, in a situation like this, it is hopeless to expect the Putin regime to fight corruption.

But there is good news too. If the Anti-Corruption Foundation has managed, under current conditions, to work so effectively that crooked officials are hiding their property specifically from us, then imagine what we will be able to do when I become president. We will put all these people in the dock. We will bring them to a fair trial. We will find, seize, and return their stolen assets to Russia. We will be able to change the state system so that there is much, much less corruption in Russia.
