The deputies of Moscow’s Krasnoselsky District seem to have hit a very raw nerve in the Kremlin by voting to hold a “Day of Free Elections” celebration on December 24.

I can’t remember seeing reports this magnificent since 2012. But now it’s even better than in 2012 — now it comes with memes!

It’s got everything: the little owl, “it blew up,” and even “everything was going so well until Navalny showed up.” And this is on federal TV!

The funniest moment is the discovery of the “Ukrainian trace” — because of course it wouldn’t be complete without that. It sounds like this: They say that recently a certain Genrikh, a Ukrainian citizen, appeared there. He was in personal contact with Yashin.

Wow!

Why there’s such hysteria is unclear. Apparently, this is a sore spot: when deputies, acting strictly within the law, do something political instead of organizing a “jam festival,” as the Kremlin and the mayor’s office apparently think they should.

Let’s look at the law on the organization of local self-government in Moscow. Article 8: Matters of local significance for a municipality.

Article 8: the establishment of local holidays and the organization of local festive events.

It really couldn’t be any clearer. And even without the law, we already know this perfectly well — we constantly see these local celebrations organized by district administrations.

If the deputies had voted for a “Tasty Milk Day” or a “Delicious Pancakes Day,” there would be absolutely no problem. Hold as many as you like. But if it’s a “Day of Free Elections,” then ATTENTION: AN ILLEGAL RALLY.

And why exactly is it illegal? There are still ten days to go — what is stopping the mayor’s office and the police from organizing public order? This isn’t even just the wish of some initiative group; it is a direct decision by the local authorities.

In short, people should come to the celebration organized by the deputies. And it would be important for all the other deputies in Moscow to support the Krasnoselsky deputies. And not just deputies, but everyone who considered the municipal elections so important. This is the moment of truth: we elected them, but will we remain indifferent if they are brazenly and illegally forbidden from carrying out their duties?

P.S. And one more thing. I wouldn’t rule out that what especially infuriates these crooks is that the same deputies doing the right things politically are also doing the right things socially.

Remember how Yashin turned down the personal car he was entitled to as head of the council of deputies? Now he has redirected that money to a social taxi service in the district, which will transport wheelchair users free of charge. Very cool.
