I am shocked by the terrible news of Arkady Babchenko’s murder. I have no doubt that this monstrous crime was motivated by Arkady’s public political stance and his professional journalistic work.

The murder must be investigated as quickly as possible, but with the utmost thoroughness. Babchenko’s colleagues, above all those at *Novaya Gazeta* (an independent Russian newspaper), should be given support in carrying out an independent investigation.

I extend my deepest condolences to Arkady’s family, loved ones, colleagues, and readers.
