It is absolutely impossible to make sense of what is happening in our healthcare system right now—either overall or in the specifics: where doctors are receiving extra payments and where they are not, where protective equipment is available and where it is not, how many doctors and nurses have already died (and by the way, do read Mediazona’s excellent investigation on the subject).
Every day, new videos appear online featuring appeals from doctors who have not been paid what they were promised. But how widespread is this? The only way to understand it is for an organization trusted by both medical workers and ordinary people to start collecting statistics.
The medical trade union Doctors’ Alliance has launched a special project called “COVID-19 Map”:
They will collect data on four problems:
- shortages of protective equipment;
- failure to pay the promised bonus payments;
- medical workers themselves are being denied coronavirus testing;
- deaths of healthcare workers from COVID.
The more doctors, nurses, paramedics, and ambulance drivers know about the project and take part in it, the more complete and reliable the information we receive will be.
