Charité Hospital, where Alexei Navalny has been since August 22, published a press release today. It confirms that Alexei was poisoned. The intoxication is known to have been caused by a substance from the group of cholinesterase inhibitors. Alexei’s condition is serious, and he remains in a coma.
Here is a translation of the press release:
Clinical findings indicate that Alexei Navalny was poisoned
Since Saturday, doctors at Charité University Hospital have been treating Alexei Navalny. The patient is in intensive care in an induced coma. His condition is serious, but there is currently no acute danger to his life.
The team of doctors carried out a thorough examination of the patient after his admission. Clinical findings indicate intoxication caused by a substance from the group of cholinesterase inhibitors. The specific substance has not yet been identified, so a broad range of additional tests has been ordered. The effect of the toxic substance—namely, the suppression of cholinesterase production in the body—has been confirmed multiple times by independent laboratories.
In line with the diagnosis, the patient is being treated with the antidote atropine. The outcome remains uncertain, and long-term consequences, especially affecting the nervous system, cannot at this time be fully ruled out.
The treating physicians are in constant contact with Yulia Navalnaya. This publication about his health status was issued by Charité with her consent.
