In the spring of 2017, Alexei Navalny’s presidential campaign was expanding rapidly: regional headquarters were opening, volunteers were being recruited, supporters were being mobilized, and preparations were underway for the future signature drive. Campaigning was the main way to speak directly with people — on the streets, at campaign offices, at meetings, and through the distribution of campaign materials. These photographs show the campaign as the everyday work of people who were trying to break through the wall of television propaganda through personal conversations and by setting their own example.
