On May 5, 2018, the “He Is Not Our Tsar” protest took place across Russia, two days before Vladimir Putin’s latest inauguration. In various cities, at the call of Alexei Navalny, participants came out against the indefinite grip on power, corruption, and political arbitrariness. The protests ended in mass detentions and violent dispersals, especially in Moscow, where protesters were attacked, including by Cossacks wielding nagaikas (traditional whips).
