On October 7, 2017 — Vladimir Putin’s birthday — protests organized by Alexei Navalny and his supporters took place across Russia. Participants rallied against corruption and political repression and demanded that Navalny be allowed to run in the upcoming presidential election. Navalny himself was under arrest at the time. Yet the demonstrations went ahead, underscoring the strength of a campaign that continued to function even with its candidate behind bars. The protests showed that Navalny’s movement had become more than a single individual: it was now a nationwide political force.
