On October 7, 2017, Vladimir Putin’s birthday, rallies organized by Alexei Navalny and his supporters took place in cities across Russia. Participants protested corruption and political arbitrariness, and also demanded that Navalny be allowed to run in the presidential election. Navalny himself was under arrest at the time, but the protests went ahead anyway—as part of a campaign that continued to function even without its candidate at liberty.
