On April 30, 2018, thousands of people gathered on Moscow’s Sakharov Avenue to protest the authorities’ attempt to block Telegram. Alexei Navalny was one of the organizers of the rally and it became one of the largest public demonstrations in defense of internet freedom in Russia. Many participants carried paper airplanes — Telegram’s symbol, which had quickly become a broader emblem of resistance to censorship and government control of the internet. Navalny addressed the crowd, and the rally became one of the defining moments in Russia’s struggle for digital rights and free expression online.
