On January 28, 2018, "Voters' Strike" protests took place in dozens of Russian cities. They came in response to the Central Election Commission's refusal to allow Alexei Navalny to run in the presidential election: Navalny urged people not to recognize a campaign in which the main independent candidate had been barred in advance. In different cities, people took to the streets against sham elections and in support of the right to genuine political competition. The protests were accompanied by arrests.
