Samara became the twenty-third city on Alexei Navalny’s 2017 autumn campaign tour and the site of one of the most tense rallies in its final stretch. The authorities tried to disrupt the event by staging a pro-government gathering at the same venue, but Navalny switched off the loudspeakers, took a megaphone, and addressed the crowd anyway. The tour was part of Navalny’s presidential campaign: after opening regional campaign offices, he began holding large meetings with voters across Russia.
