On December 24, 2017, initiative groups in various cities across Russia nominated Alexei Navalny as a presidential candidate. For an independent candidacy, this was a mandatory legal procedure, but politically the day became the culmination of the entire 2017 campaign: campaign offices, volunteers, and supporters across the country gathered to formally back Alexei’s nomination. The very next day, the Central Election Commission refused to register Navalny, but the sheer scale of the process showed that the campaign had become nationwide.
