I’m walking down the street and thinking about this: The medical workers’ union asked us to send a film crew with their representative to one of the hospitals. This is the town of Vidnoye in the Moscow region. It’s the usual “optimization” — doctors have been laid off, salaries are low, there’s no medicine, and the infectious diseases ward has been closed, so now people have to travel to another town. The chief doctor intimidates anyone who is unhappy, so they filed a complaint with the union. The union representative arrives at the meeting, and do you know what he hears from the chief doctor? “I’m going to call the FSB (Russia’s security service) right now — what you’re doing is tantamount to terrorism.” This is the wealthy Moscow region.
