Alexei sent this post a few days ago. Yesterday, it became known that he had been “transferred out” of Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention center (a Moscow jail). We do not know where he is now. At the same time, under a ruling by the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights), Alexei must be released immediately. I get a walk every day. More than that, it’s mandatory. Only a doctor can excuse you from it (kind of like being excused from PE at school). But I don’t need that — I like the walks (PE, not so much). Here’s how it works. First, the voice of our ship’s command center announces from inside the wall: - Get ready for the season, without belongings or documents. About 15 minutes later, the door opens, they search you, and with your hands behind your back you walk to the stairs. There, the guard switches on a siren, and it blares the whole time you’re going down the stairs. And the guard also very deftly runs a metal key along the railing bars, producing a “TRRRR” even more deafening than the siren. On the ground floor there are exercise yards. They take you into one of them — it’s really just another cell, only with bars instead of a roof. Up above, a guy in a sheepskin coat walks around supervising everyone out on their walk. He’s very cold. There’s also a surveillance camera overhead and a whole lot of barbed wire, more bars, and a strip about 1.5 meters wide through which you can see the sky. In a grid. Retro FM is blasting at full volume — loudly, so that shouting to each other is impossible. The walk lasts about 20 songs. I walk in circles. One song clockwise, the next counterclockwise. Since Retro FM (it’s always the only thing playing) covers the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, sometimes they play techno (did you know I really love techno?) With regular music, I just walk, but with techno, I walk and bob my head to the beat. At those moments, I imagine I’m hanging out with those guys from the famous Jim Carrey sketch where they’re rocking out to *What Is Love*. I love it. So you should listen to your favorite music too, and get some fresh air more often 😉
