Three things never cease to amaze me: the starry sky above us, the categorical imperative within us, and the marvelous feeling of running your palm over your freshly shaved head. Greetings to everyone from "Enhanced Control Sector A." I have to admit that the Russian prison system has managed to surprise me. I never imagined it was possible to set up a real concentration camp just 100 km (62 miles) from Moscow. So far, I have not seen any violence, or even a hint of it, though judging by the tense postures of the prisoners, standing rigidly at attention and afraid to turn their heads one extra time, I can easily believe the many stories that here, at Penal Colony No. 2 in Pokrov, people were quite recently beaten half to death with wooden mallets. The methods have changed now, and honestly, I can hardly think of another place where everyone speaks so politely and, in a certain sense, even warmly. That is what I call my new home: "our friendly concentration camp." The regime, the regulations, the daily schedule. The literal enforcement of endless rules. Swearing and slang are forbidden. And that ban is strictly observed. Can you imagine a prison where no one curses? Terrifying. There are video cameras everywhere, everyone is under surveillance, and the slightest violation results in a report. It seems to me that someone at the top read Orwell's *1984* and said: - Ah, nice. Let's make one of those. Re-education through dehumanization. But if you take it all with a sense of humor, life is bearable. So overall, I am doing fine. There are even colorful moments in these black-and-white days. For example, I wear a badge on my chest with my name and photo, underlined with a lovely red stripe. Because I am considered an escape risk, remember? At night, every hour, I wake up to find a man in a padded jacket standing beside my bed. He films me on camera and says: "2:30 a.m., inmate Navalny. Preventive monitoring as an escape risk. Present." And I calmly fall asleep again with the thought that there are people who remember me and will never lose me. Great, right? You, too, should stay in touch with your loved ones. Hugs to everyone 😉
