Once, Yulia, one of our friends, and I were walking through the city at night. I don’t remember where we’d stayed so late, but it was deep into the night, and every so often people would emerge from the dark courtyards and alleyways and, spotting our friend, say, “Oh, hello.” They would come up and start talking to him. And it was clear that our friend didn’t personally know these people, yet he spoke with every one of them about their problems as if they had only paused the conversation an hour earlier. These people called our friend by different names. Some said “Yevgeny,” some “Yevgeny Vadimovich,” some “Uncle Zhenya,” but they always ended the conversation the same way—they would say “thank you so much” and shake his hand. I watched all this and thought: “This is how good government ought to be.” The city we were walking through was, of course, Yekaterinburg, and our friend was Yevgeny Roizman @evgeniyroizman, then the mayor of the city. Today he turns 60. Yevgeny, heartfelt congratulations to you. You are a good, kind, and honest man. Stay healthy! A handshake.
