In the summer of 2018, Alexei Navalny launched a campaign against raising the retirement age. This reform became one of the most painful issues for millions of people: the authorities were taking away years of retirement from citizens, breaking earlier promises and the social contract.

Navalny announced and supported protest actions across different cities. The campaign combined street protests, the work of regional headquarters, and public pressure at a time when the legislation was moving through parliament. The campaign culminated in a nationwide protest on September 9, 2018 — the day of regional elections. Demonstrations took place in more than 20 cities and were accompanied by mass arrests. The campaign showed that social injustice could become a political issue of national significance, and that Navalny’s regional network was capable of quickly turning public frustration into organized action.
