The film “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” is being released in China in a heavily censored version. This is how the company distributing the film in the country responded to complaints from the first viewers. The first negative reactions came from those who managed to see the film before it was altered. In particular, viewers were outraged by the pirate from Singapore, who appears on screen bald, with long fingernails, and dressed in clothing from the Qing dynasty. Many users on Chinese internet forums, as ITAR-TASS (a Russian state news agency) put it, bitterly remarked that the appearance and behavior of the Southeast Asian corsair reflected Hollywood producers’ ideas about Chinese people. In addition, Chinese audiences were shocked by scenes in which the Singaporean pirate recites an excerpt from the poem “The Moon Shines Over the Border Mountain” by a medieval poet. Earlier, the distribution company had promised that the film would not be censored except for scenes with excessive violence or frightening moments. However, after the public’s initial reaction, the picture was handed over to the censors. Which, according to BBC observations, made the film’s plot rather difficult to follow. In my opinion, POTC 3 doesn’t have any plot at all. You could cut out any part of it, and it wouldn’t affect the overall impression of the film in the slightest.
