The newspaper "Novye Izvestia" regularly asks me for comments on all sorts of controversial urban services issues. Well, obviously — I’m the "Committee for the Protection of Muscovites." The topics vary. Sometimes they’re fairly entertaining, like rabid dogs and the like. Today they asked about cemeteries. Whether private cemeteries should be developed. Because in Yekaterinburg, private operators have appeared — offering crypts where many people can be buried compactly at once. I replied that allocating burial plots is not an area where market relations are needed. Moscow should build new cemeteries in the Moscow region. Otherwise, private companies with their beautiful, cozy crypts will simply demolish other people’s graves. When I got to the words "cozy crypts," I couldn’t help laughing, which I think really surprised the Novye Izvestia reporter. I hope tomorrow there won’t be a piece saying, "Alexei Navalny, chuckling, commented on the crypt situation as follows..." I also wanted to joke that someone should check whether those guys from Yekaterinburg with their crypts show up in mirrors. But I realized that would be beside the point.
