It is said that the people of Vienna do not like this monument. Supposedly, it is not a monument to liberation, but a monument to Russian domination. In fact, that is exactly the impression it gives. All the inscriptions are in Russian. The text of Stalin’s order is very much in keeping with the spirit of the time. No sentiment at all toward the residents of Vienna. German occupiers, and that’s that. But that is how it really was. So let it stand, so the locals remember. Under the 1955 treaty, the Austrian government undertook to maintain the monument in perpetuity.
