In southern Moscow, a driver moonlighting as an unlicensed cabbie doused a female passenger with gasoline and set her on fire. The woman suffered burns over 90% of her body and was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition. She is currently in intensive care. As the Moscow police department for the Southern Administrative District told RBC, the driver of a VAZ-2106 was giving a 35-year-old woman a ride when he stopped the car in a deserted area and tried to rape her. When she resisted, the man pushed her out of the car, poured gasoline on her, set her on fire, and drove away. The crime was committed late Saturday night in the Biryulyovo-Zapadnoye district, on Podolsk Cadets Street. Police officers quickly detained the suspected perpetrator, a 53-year-old citizen of Azerbaijan. http://top.rbc.ru/incidents/30/03/2008/153843.shtml I hope the SOVA Center (a Russian human rights and anti-xenophobia watchdog) includes this episode in its annual report. Under the section "Discrimination based on nationality": A Moscow woman got into a taxi, but refused to have sex with the driver, thereby insulting his national dignity.
