At the request of Comrade Kashin, I inspected the monument to those who died during the Great Patriotic War (the Soviet term for the Eastern Front of World War II) on Palanga’s main street, to see whether it had been demolished.
The Eternal Flame has been extinguished. But the monument itself is still standing. In excellent condition, flowers and all. And the now-illegal-in-Lithuania coat of arms of the USSR is still glaringly shining in the sun. They’ll probably rip the emblem off soon and replace it with a granite plaque.
