For the past few days, I’ve been very curious whether there are any left-liberal anti-war types among Georgian politicians. We’ve got plenty of them here. Every time you look at statements from the “non-systemic opposition,” it’s always “Putin’s inept regime is to blame.” In the broadest possible sense. Going as far as Novodvorskaya’s “the eternally sinking boat called ‘Russia’” (a reference to Russian dissident Valeria Novodvorskaya). There are quite a lot of them on LiveJournal too. In theory, Georgia should have people like that as well. The kind who demand an immediate end to the war and independence for the peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Following a link from smitrich, I found a statement by the **Central Committee of the United Communist Party of Georgia: ***Georgia has been plunged into yet another bloody chaos! Fratricidal war on Georgian soil has erupted with renewed force. The predictions of the United Communist Party of Georgia and of Georgia’s progressive public figures about the disastrous consequences of the country’s militarization, about the danger of the authorities’ proto-fascist nationalist policies, have, to our great regret, come true. Once again, the Georgian authorities have organized a bloody massacre, feeling the support of certain Western countries, international and regional organizations behind them. The disgrace that the current authorities have brought down upon the Georgian people will take decades to wash away. ... We call on all political forces in Georgia, all social movements, and the people of Georgia to unite in order to free Georgia from Saakashvili’s anti-popular, Russophobic, proto-fascist regime! *http://smitrich.livejournal.com/648228.html And what about the Georgian liberals? Or is it only in Russia that they’re peace-loving and recognize the right of nations to self-determination? If anyone on my feed knows Georgian politics well, share some information/links. Maybe there are at least some Georgian users who are currently acting as “yaOssetians” (apparently posing online as Ossetians). Surely there isn’t not a single one.
