This is an absolute nightmare. For me, it also feels like some kind of cruel twist of fate. I didn’t know Yevloyev, never friended his blog on LiveJournal, and know very little about him. The only time he ever came to my LJ was to jump into my argument with timur_aliev and remind me of the circumstances in which Kadyrov’s “police officers” shot a man dead in the middle of Moscow, claiming that he had resisted arrest. Now he himself has been killed in circumstances that are even more outrageous, but disturbingly similar. mrparker suggests that Yevloyev was killed by accident and that this could be an excellent pretext for removing Zyazikov from office. Even if that’s true, what the hell is happening in this country if, in order to remove the incompetent president of a tiny republic, the cops have to grab a man and almost publicly shoot him in their car?! This whole “pacification of the Caucasus” is worth next to nothing. Or rather, it costs us many billions, and the result is worth next to nothing. There is no real authority there at all. They may have hung Putin’s portraits everywhere, but the essence hasn’t changed: primitive men with assault rifles are dividing up their flocks of sheep, fuel trucks, and stolen money.
