Now judgment day is approaching for 2x2. According to RBC Daily, a decision to revoke the channel’s license could be made as early as this week. The animation scandal should serve as a lesson to others. If many Russian TV professionals do not radically change their approach to their work, and continue feeding audiences low-quality but commercially successful entertainment, the authorities really will come for them. This has nothing to do with attempts to strangle free speech or impose censorship. Those who shout about that are simply lying to save themselves. Television is far too powerful and far too pervasive a tool for shaping the public for the state to keep turning a blind eye to what is happening on the “blue screens” (a Russian expression for TV screens).
