A mass brawl broke out the day before in one of the villages of Dagestan (a republic in Russia’s North Caucasus). Several people were injured in the incident, including law enforcement officers. The conflict erupted during a freestyle wrestling competition. Athletes from the two villages of Gerga and Utamysh-Kayakent were settling scores on the mat. But when the referee announced the results, local residents who disagreed with the decision began settling scores with each other. About 1,500 people took part in the fight. At first, the villagers fought hand-to-hand, but then firearms were brought into play. To put down the unrest, reinforced police units and OMON riot police arrived at the scene.
