A mass brawl broke out the day before in one of the villages of Dagestan (a republic in Russia’s North Caucasus). Several people were injured in the incident, including law enforcement officers. The conflict erupted during a freestyle wrestling competition. Athletes from the two villages of Gerga and Utamysh-Kayakent were settling scores on the mat. But when the referee announced the results, local residents who disagreed with the decision began settling scores with each other. About 1,500 people took part in the fight. At first, the villagers fought hand-to-hand, but then firearms were brought into play. To put down the unrest, reinforced police units and OMON riot police arrived at the scene. But bullets were soon flying over them as well, and participants opened fire on the security forces. As a result, the head of the district police department was wounded. In addition, one of the participants in the brawl was killed, and three others were hospitalized in critical condition. It should be added that freestyle wrestling in Dagestan is more than just a sport, so it is not the first time that wrestlers have continued settling disputes with their fists after a match. Last year, a similar clash also broke out at a championship in Baku, this time between athletes from Dagestan and Azerbaijan. It should also be noted that several months earlier, a mass brawl and shootout between two groups of natives of Dagestan also took place in Moscow. As a result, one person was killed and four suffered gunshot wounds of varying severity. here, via a link from Dikiy.
