Do you know who Karl Moderakh is? Just that his last name sounds a bit like “moderator”? Well, I know more. Recently I dropped by Perm RTR (a regional state TV channel) with belyh. They have a program there called "The Name of Great Perm." Sure, the show was completely ripped off from "The Name of Russia," but it still turned out pretty well. It was the first time in my life I’d seen people argue so fiercely over local history topics. Belykh spoke up for this very Moderakh and nearly tore half the studio apart over him. His opponents were hilarious: some Orthodox priest said that Moderakh was German and Lutheran, so even though he built Orthodox churches, he "must surely have done it with great reluctance in his heart." One middle-aged lady was shouting that before making a choice, we need to "understand how our famous Ural character was formed." I still didn’t get who exactly she was campaigning for. Why am I writing this post? I’m writing it to urge you to vote for this same Moderakh too. We have to push our line, after all. Otherwise all those pitiful admirers of Soldatov and Diaghilev will win. You can vote here. What if you don’t live in Perm Krai? Who cares—go there and vote anyway. Let’s choose Perm’s "name of Perm" with the help of Muscovites! And of course, a bonus: anyone who votes for Moderakh can get some kind of post in the Kirov Oblast government. Or we’ll pay you in property: a logging plot, some land, whatever. The region is big. What do we care—it’s not ours we’re giving away, it belongs to the people.
