We’ve just got back from the rally against the illegal construction on General Glagolev Street. They did end up tearing down the fence.
Why it was torn down is explained here. It was hard to break: it was made of concrete blocks with metal sheets. They tried to dismantle it, couldn’t, and in the end just knocked it over. It took about 80 people to bring it down. It was pretty funny watching the guards of the illegal construction site try to prop it up from the inside. The cops who arrived (the head of the Khoroshyovo-Mnevniki district police station and the deputy head of the Public Security Police of the North-Western Administrative District) couldn’t do anything — we had a prosecutor’s order in hand stating that the fence was illegal and had to be dismantled. And the residents simply didn’t let them get through to us. Basically, they boxed them in. Incidentally, the deputy head of the Public Security Police of the North-Western Administrative District turned out to be a reasonable guy, and we managed to agree that he would post officers by the fence and stop the builders from restoring it, while we, in return, agreed not to finish tearing it down completely and to end the rally. And within 24 hours, the prefect will take action. As for trust in the prefect of the North-Western Administrative District, it’s not just low. There’s none at all. But in this case, it will be extremely hard for him to wriggle out of it.
