I don’t know whether everything can be found in Greece, but there is clearly no shortage of good weather here. And from my window I can see Mount Olympus. Another idiot’s dream has come true: I’ve learned to surf — windsurf, that is. But this post isn’t about my life story; it’s a question. Tell me, friends, have you ever come across crazy women with wildly overdone eye makeup? I run into them constantly. In every hotel, at every big gathering, in every large group, there always seems to be some auntie who looks like an Indian. And there is one here now. I keep bumping into her in the restaurant. Her eyebrows aren’t just painted on. Above her actual brows there’s a pitch-black stripe, about 1.5 cm wide. Her eyelashes are black as coal. And her eyes are outlined in black so heavily that any panda would die of envy. On top of that, the eyeliner wings stretch almost all the way to her ears. It really is monstrous. Don’t get me wrong — I’m not against makeup, but this is a nightmare. And it’s not just me who thinks so: I can see other people reacting the same way. They turn around, whisper, laugh. Meanwhile, the woman herself clearly considers herself a stunning femme fatale, carries herself proudly, and favors red. I’m just curious: does she ever look in the mirror? At the very least, she must notice that she looks VERY different from everyone around her. And what about her husband? Her children? Are they really so afraid to hint, “Mom, don’t paint your eyebrows with shoe polish,” that they’d rather have dinner and go to the beach accompanied by a Comanche? The whole thing seems strange to me. Some kind of mystery of the female soul. I asked my wife, and she just laughs. Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon, and does anyone know how to explain it?
