I also really dislike the cancellation of TopYandex. From personal experience, I can say that making it into the top five at least doubles the number of views. For "Gazprom-related" posts, this matters: it helps reach a new audience, shareholders immediately start writing comments, and so on. So TopYandex is not just PR—it has real practical value. But here’s what I think: 95% of top posts are from LiveJournal. LiveJournal has its own popular posts ranking. But hardly anyone uses it now, and most users don’t even know it exists. All that needs to be done is to add a Top button (or something like that) on each user’s page, next to the Recent Entries, Friends, Archive, and User Info buttons. Then people won’t scatter across different rankings—they’ll be able to see everything in one place. This is exactly where the famous "LiveJournal Supervisory Board" would come in handy. It could serve as a guarantor that there’s no manipulation in the rankings and could propose new ranking algorithms. Does anyone understand how this request could be formalized? Maybe write to that very supervisory board?
