Today’s meeting of Sberbank’s committee for engagement with minority shareholders was the liveliest one in its entire history. The reason was this draft appeal to Sber’s Supervisory Board regarding support for UC Rusal and its main owner (and also my personal favorite), Deripaska. After heated and emotional debate, with voices periodically being raised, my draft was not approved. Instead, it was decided to send a broader, systemic appeal to the Management Board (with a copy to the Supervisory Board), requesting information on major troubled borrowers in general, the dynamics of their loans, their weight in the portfolio, and so on. UC Rusal will be mentioned as one borrower among others (3–5 names in total). In the view of the majority of committee members, singling out Rusal alone would be inappropriate. We’ll finalize the text by Monday. Not exactly what I had hoped for, but it’s fine. Still, I came away from the meeting with a deep sense of satisfaction. It’s encouraging that we are discussing genuinely important issues in the context of a real debate, without any mindless rubber-stamping. That’s very good. The statement in its original form will still be sent to the Supervisory Boards of Sber and VTB, but on behalf of an initiative group of shareholders. In addition, I will personally appeal to Sber’s independent directors, asking them to raise the issue at the Supervisory Board.
