During my trip to Yekaterinburg, there was one remarkable event I want to talk about in more detail. City Duma deputy Leonid Volkov leonwolf arranged a meeting for me with local young lawyers who want to conduct anti-corruption investigations. Or rather, not just want to—they are already doing it. They’re very sharp, and they’ll have plenty of work, because for anyone interested in investigating corruption in Sverdlovsk Region, the opportunities are endless. Here is one of the cases they are working on (and I promised to help however I can):
That man in glasses is Misharin, the governor of Sverdlovsk Region. Incidentally, he is a member of the Supreme Council of the United Russia party. The man is very fond of money. And he has some very talented relatives.
This pretty young woman is the governor’s daughter, Anastasia. She is not only pretty, but also very smart. Anastasia is a young entrepreneur. At the age of 18, she became a co-founder of the company Argus and contributed 125 million rubles (about $4 million at the time) to its charter capital. Let that be an example to all of you. While you were chewing sandwiches and pastries in the school cafeteria, Anastasia was saving. That’s how she managed to put together 125 million. And once she had it, she invested it. Very successfully. Argus began building a plywood plant in the region. Construction is expensive. For example, getting connected to the power grid is very expensive; because of that, many businesses in our country fail to grow, and some go under altogether. But that did not happen to Anastasia Misharina. After all, they care about business in Sverdlovsk Region. So the company Agrus was connected to the power grid under a special individual arrangement, saving 75 million rubles (about $2.4 million at the time). Anastasia is no fool! She knew exactly where to invest! Then came more amusing coincidences: Argus was lined up for budget subsidies, state guarantees on loans, budget-funded money for the construction of a thermal power plant, and so on. You can read all about it in detail, with links and evidence, in Volkov’s post here and in the posts that followed. By the way, the impressive entrepreneurial talents of Governor Misharin’s young daughter do not end there. Not bad, right? I don’t understand why Russia even needs business schools when it has natural talents like this. And yet, for some reason, this group of Yekaterinburg lawyers does not believe in A. Misharina’s entrepreneurial genius and thinks it all comes down to her crooked father and abuse of office. Whether he is crooked or not is for the court to decide, so the lawyers are now seeking to have a criminal case opened against Misharin. In my view, the grounds are all there. If anyone wants to take part in this work, get in touch with leonwolf One important point I want to emphasize. The successful entrepreneur Misharina has a business partner.
The successful entrepreneur Surovikina (in the center of the photo). Her business talents are apparently in no way connected to the fact that her husband, Lieutenant General Sergei Surovikin, is deputy commander of the troops of the Central Military District.
Now that is one impressive papakha (a traditional fur military hat) he has. I don’t know how many impoverished officers without apartments there are in the Volga-Ural Military District, or what they think of their millionaire general, but apparently Monsieur Surovikin has decided to play the tough guy and is threatening Leonid Volkov and his colleagues. He is passing along various loaded messages through mutual acquaintances. The general idea being: you offended my wife, and they’ll pay for it. Dear General Surovikin, if you had been a bit more careful with your business activities, no one would be investigating you in the first place. Go focus on combat and political training, or whatever it is you are supposed to be doing. If you want the high life, take off the karakul papakha and go into business. But threatening Volkov is a mistake. It will only make things worse. P.S. If anyone has acquaintances serving in the Volga-Ural Military District, please forward this post to them. The troops should know their commander.
