Yesterday, a figure on Euronews really shocked me: "In Europe, 8,000 people die from drug addiction every year." Only that many? Then why is there such a huge fuss over drugs? I checked Yandex. HORROR: Here, 60,000 people die by suicide every year. In road accidents, more than 30,000 a year. From smoking-related diseases, more than a million a year. From alcoholism—it's scary even to think how many. From drugs—only 7,000 to 8,000. Even taking into account the social danger posed by drug addicts and the fact that they spread AIDS, it's still unclear why we need the Federal Drug Control Service (Russia's former anti-narcotics agency) on such a scale?! Plus, every police station has specialized units for this. Plus, on TV everyone is constantly screeching about drugs. If all that energy were redirected toward fighting suicide and road accidents, there would definitely be more benefit.
