Two years ago, Sergei Magnitsky was killed in Matrosskaya Tishina (a Moscow pre-trial detention center).
He did not die — he was killed. He was deliberately denied medical care until he died in agony. What is that, if not murder? The "Magnitsky case" forced us to rethink the mechanisms and levels of political protection for corruption. And the distance from "fraud on paper" to an innocent man dying in pre-trial detention. Despite the international scandal, not a single one of the bandits, fraudsters, and killers has been held accountable to this day. There is only the laughable negligence charge against one of the prison doctors. As for the theft of 5.4 billion rubles (the case Magnitsky was investigating), there is complete dead silence. That kind of silence does a great deal to consolidate our authorities' power. It is becoming clear that a real investigation into the schemes involving the illegal refund of billions in corporate profit tax and VAT would put officials of the very highest rank in the dock. But the "Magnitsky case" can no longer be buried or shut down. Sooner or later, justice will prevail. Yes, we will neither forget nor forgive. In Memory of Sergei Magnitsky.
