Vladimir Ashurkov is a dream hire for any employer. At 22, after graduating from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, he enrolled in one of the world’s most prestigious business schools—the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. So when he returned home from the United States, he already had a "pass" into the business world in hand. At 35, Ashurkov became a top manager at Alfa Group and would likely have continued climbing the corporate ladder if, between the lines of his brilliantly polished résumé, one could not read his friendship with blogger and opposition figure Alexei Navalny. For his contribution to the fight against corruption, Ashurkov paid with the job he loved. The newly appointed executive director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation does not see his move from business to politics as romantic, calling his decision "super-pragmatic.".
