Dear residents of apartment buildings, do you have an Allen key? You almost certainly do. Check your toolbox. It may look something like this:
On almost every apartment entrance in Moscow (and many other cities), the city authorities have slapped up these sort of wooden notice boxes. And so that ordinary people can’t put up their own notices—and so that the box contains nothing but the smiling faces of Sobyanin (Moscow’s mayor; “dear Muscovites, blah blah blah”), some prefect Zotov (“dear residents of the South-Eastern District, blah blah blah”), and approved advertising—the box is shut with a plexiglass door.
And the door is fastened with bolts. And what opens those bolts easily? That’s right: an Allen key.
Strictly speaking, they ought to be paying you for those advertising-and-information boxes attached to your building entrance. The entrance is shared common property. But of course they haven’t paid, which gives us an extra moral and ethical reason to take an Allen key and neatly place a couple of notices inside the box. They’re clearly visible, the walls don’t get damaged, and it’s very quick. I’ve got an Allen key:
