It’s a bit of a shame about the $189 we’ll have to pay to obtain, apostille, and ship the original documents on his real estate holdings. They’ll arrive in Moscow tomorrow, but they won’t be needed anymore (or maybe they still will). It would have been a splendid showdown. We were already looking forward to the claims that “it’s all a forgery cooked up by the State Department.” This is also, by the way, another example of why information about fraud and violations should not just be published, but formalized in the form of complaints, statements, and so on. To be fair, it has to be acknowledged that Pekhtin’s decision shows that somewhere deep down, he still has some remnants of a conscience. Maybe the other United Russia members sensed that, and that’s why they appointed him to the ethics commission? Let’s compare this with how the other concealers of foreign real estate choose to behave.
