Ilya Segalovich, one of Yandex’s founders, has died. He was only 48. Among many other things, Ilya will remain for us a model of ethical conduct. He drew a clear line between his personal views and the company’s position, yet at the same time did not believe it was possible to hide his own views. He was one of the key pillars of Russia’s IT industry and helped create a mobile app for election observers. He was an “ideal capitalist” — someone who earned his money through his own intellect and hard work, was personally involved in charity, and was not afraid to openly support political projects. For example, on his own initiative and with his own money, he paid for advertising for the elections to the Coordination Council (an opposition body). He fought his illness for a long time, but in the end it prevailed. The last time I saw Ilya was at the May 6 march dedicated to political prisoners. He was walking modestly with everyone else, wearing some gray hooded jacket. May his memory be a blessing. He was a very good man.
