As is well known, over at the debates LJ jury, we recruit bloggers with over a thousand followers. Most agree to come on board (many thanks to them for that), some do not. But I was absolutely sure I knew all the more or less decent thousand-plus bloggers. Not necessarily personally, of course, but at least I knew they existed and had visited their journals. And then some Martaketra won the "Parker Prize," and I had literally never even heard of her. She has nearly 5,000 friends! How is that even possible? When we look for thousand-plus bloggers for the LJ jury, we sometimes browse LJPlus to see who interesting we might invite. There’s a ranking there. No Martaketra was anywhere in it. All right, maybe I’m just out of the loop, but I asked yellow_reporter and yashin, who spend all day on LiveJournal and start going through withdrawal if the internet gets cut off. They had never heard of her either. I had assumed, of course, that there was a "politicized LiveJournal," where everyone knows everyone else, and then the rest of it. But not to this extent. Martaketra couldn’t have stayed hidden for that long. If any Martaketra fans are reading this, please understand me correctly. I’m not in any way diminishing this lady’s merits. She clearly has them—otherwise she wouldn’t have won the prize. I’m just surprised.
