Another story from office hours: Two perfectly ordinary middle-aged women came in. An outrageous, lawless situation. They’re taking away both a children’s playground and a sports ground for development. They’re building an administrative office. The city gets absolutely nothing out of it, etc. So, they left, but a minute later one of them came back and quietly said: "You know, she (the other woman) has a Georgian last name, and mine is Dagaeva. Maybe we should send you some other residents instead? Otherwise, you’ll be writing about this everywhere and mentioning our surnames, people will see that we’re not ethnically Russian, and that could hurt the case." I WAS JUST SITTING THERE IN SHOCK. I’d never really believed the stories about non-Russians being discriminated against in Moscow. And there’s no discrimination here either. What’s horrifying is the very way the question was framed.
