On January 31, 2021, a second wave of rallies in support of Alexei Navalny took place after his return to Russia and subsequent detention. The protests were held two days before a court hearing at which his suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case was to be converted into a real prison term. People took to the streets in Russian cities and abroad demanding Navalny’s release; the demonstrations were once again accompanied by mass detentions and the use of force by authorities. The demand for Navalny’s freedom became one of the Russian opposition’s main unifying slogans.
