On January 31, 2021, a second wave of rallies in support of Alexei Navalny took place after his return to Russia and subsequent detention. The protests were held two days before a court hearing at which authorities planned to replace his suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case with a real prison term. People took to the streets in cities across Russia and abroad demanding Navalny's release; once again, the rallies were accompanied by mass detentions and the use of force by the authorities. The demand for freedom for Navalny became one of the main unifying slogans of the Russian opposition.
