The Anti-Corruption Fighter’s Secret Millions

Hi, this is Navalny, and once again I'm being

"exposed" by NTV, the television company. Citizen

Navralny on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Not long ago, another chief liar of

Russian television, Dmitry Kiselyov,

was saying that I'm an agent of all

foreign intelligence services at once. The sensational

material ended up with our "couple-affairs commentator"

Yevgeny Popov. This is the criminal

correspondence of a small-time political

corrupt figure, repeat offender Alexei

Navalny, with British subject

Bill Browder. And you can still

find a lot of funny

breakdowns of the blunders in that film, like

the fact that in secret reports, CIA agents

write to each other with so many

grammatical mistakes that even any

Russian schoolchild would never make them.

And now there's a new investigation into

my secret millions. The secret bookkeeping

of a fighter against Russian corruption. In 1, 2, 3 days

he can receive several million

rubles. And you know, I'm actually somewhat

puzzled by the fact that the Kremlin and its

propaganda keep constantly harping on the subject of my

income, or supposed lack of it. Even though

for many years I've been living literally under

X-rays. Searches are carried out at my

home and workplace. Documents are seized

from my bank, from the tax authorities, and from

the clinic I go to. This is

the absolute truth, not a joke at all.

All of my financial transactions

are examined under a microscope.

So when it comes to my income and its complete

transparency and legality,

the Kremlin knows very well. I also

filed detailed declarations of

both income and assets when

I ran for mayor of Moscow. They are still

available online for everyone. Go and

take a look. And overall, I believe that I am

the most transparent politician in Russia. But

even so, the Kremlin keeps

starting up the same old song about how I am supposedly

unemployed, yet possess secret

millions. I think it's simply because

I investigate their secret millions. And

of course, what also worries them greatly is

my election campaign. Still,

in any case, since this topic

has come up and on Friday an entire

film is coming out on one of the main TV channels, I

let me once again, at least here on YouTube,

tell you about my income and assets

and give specific figures. The deadline for filing

the annual declaration hasn't arrived yet, but I

asked my accountant simply

to send me the data for last year

that will appear in that declaration. And

now I'm happy to share them

with you. So, my income for 2016

amounted to 8,692,000

rubles, of which 3,419,000

were paid to me by our very own Russian Ministry of Justice under

a ruling by the European Court, because I

won my case against them and proved that the so-

called Kirovles case against me

was completely fabricated. So,

strictly speaking, you could say that I

didn't actually earn that entire amount in 2016,

not 8.5 million, but only 5,273,000

rubles. How did I earn that amount? You

know that by education and by

profession I am a lawyer. Until 2013 I was a

licensed attorney, and then I was stripped of that status

because I was convicted. And I was convicted

in that very Kirovles case, which

the European Court later found to be

fabricated, ordering Russia to pay

me the compensation that was paid

last year. That's the kind of

circular setup it creates. After

I was stripped of that status, I could no longer

work as an attorney, so I did the same thing

that 99%

of Russian lawyers in private

practice do: I registered as a sole proprietor, that is,

so now my official place of work is

formally listed as sole proprietor

Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny.

As a sole proprietor, I have the right

to enter into contracts with clients and

receive money from them. I receive all this money

by bank transfer into my business account

and pay taxes on it. In the past

year, I paid the state in taxes

244,549

rubles. The bank, the Interior Ministry, the FSB, and the tax authorities—

all of them can see all my payments, all my

contracts, all my clients. And not once

has there been a single complaint

or claim against me on that score, simply because it is all

completely legal, and there is nothing

to pick apart. Do I have many clients?

No, not many. I'm, excuse me, a fairly well-known

lawyer and of course I could take on more

clients and earn more, but that

would interfere with my main

work—political and

anti-corruption. My main

goal here is not to earn more, but

to earn enough to cover all

expenses, so that I have enough, first and foremost,

for rent, which is currently

my main expense. So

there is nothing unclear about my income and its sources.

Now let's

look at my property. And

a four-room apartment in Moscow. I

have an apartment in the Maryino district of Moscow

with an area of 76 sq. m. Over the last few

months I have been living in a rented apartment and

have said quite openly that I was looking for a place

to rent. The apartment really is

a four-room one, and that's what I was looking for,

because my children are already grown up, and they

of different genders, and they had to be moved

into separate rooms at last,

so they would stop fighting over

whose turn it was to sit at the desk.

This apartment, however, is located

not in some elite central district at all, but not far

from Avtozavodskaya metro station, where our office is located.

Cars. My wife has a

car. It is a 2012 Ford Explorer.

And in the video, yes, that really is it

driving. New York schools for children.

A school for children in New York. Now that,

of course, is a complete lie, because both

of my children attend a school in Moscow, in

the same Marina district. There is also

a very funny bit there about five-star

hotels. Five-star hotels. I mean,

sure, it happens. I can stay in a

five-star hotel,

but what you see in this

"shocking" NTV footage, where my wife and I are shown,

clearly does not look like a five-star hotel, as

you can see. And in general, I have

an objective reason to

save heavily, unfortunately, on

travel, because I have not been issued a

foreign passport, and I have been barred from leaving the country for 5 years

and can only vacation within Russia. Last

summer I was in Karelia, and before

that in Altai. So that is basically

all. And, you know, it is even a little unpleasant

that listing my property took up

so little space in this video. But

what is there is there. And, by the way, this

always motivates me greatly in my

anti-corruption work. After all, I can see

that my income is, well, fairly high,

let us be honest, and it is higher,

much higher than that of the overwhelming

majority of officials. But I know for a fact

that you cannot live that kind of

luxurious life on that money, the kind they live.

Because I would like, for example,

to buy an apartment in Moscow, but I cannot, and

I live in a rented one. And when I see the size

of their apartments in the city center, the cost of their

cars, the cost of their children's education, I

understand that they are stealing, and I very much

want to expose them. In conclusion,
