But this morning came the news that, by court order, Oleg had been released from the punishment cell (SHIZO, a Russian penal isolation unit) pending consideration of his appeal. He was released not into the regular prison barracks, but under “strict conditions.” Today, Oleg sent out a text with a post about it.

And by lunchtime, the prison colony administration had issued him a new “disciplinary sanction” and thrown him back into SHIZO for another 15 days. You can read about what SHIZO is here.

Well, what is there to say? These bastards are openly tormenting him. And besides, it is now completely clear that this is not a local initiative, but an order from the very top. Otherwise, this could not have happened the day after the arrival of a commission from the Human Rights Commissioner’s Office (the Russian ombudsman) and an open letter signed by many people, including a Nobel laureate.

It may well be a direct reaction to the letter: a way of showing that no letters of any kind matter to them.

PS The colony has been connected to FSIN-Letter, the Russian prison service’s electronic mail system. Oleg can now be written to not on paper, but through this system. Select “Oryol Region, IK-5 Naryshkino” for Oleg Anatolyevich Navalny, born in 1983.
