Be sure to read this little screed from the Justice Ministry on designating Memorial (a prominent Russian human rights organization) a “foreign agent.” A historic document.

p. 10 <…> At the same time, monitoring of the official website of the Memorial Human Rights Center makes it possible to conclude that this organization is actively engaged in political activity aimed at shaping negative public opinion regarding state policy pursued by the highest bodies of state authority, expresses disagreement with the decisions and actions of the said institutions of power, with the results of preliminary investigations, and with court verdicts handed down in high-profile criminal cases, as evidenced by certain examples, information about which is provided below.

In other words, a human rights organization called black black, and described the Bolotnaya case (the prosecution of protesters after the 2012 Bolotnaya Square demonstrations in Moscow) as political and fabricated. This is treated as undermining the constitutional order through calls to change the political regime.

In a way, the Justice Ministry people stated it all quite frankly: the current regime in Russia hangs only on the verdicts of the Zamoskvoretsky District Court. There is no other source of legitimacy, and disagreement with a verdict is precisely an “undermining of the foundations.”
