Russia has a crazy governor. We wouldn’t even have paid attention to him if he hadn’t started coming after us himself and claiming that I want “to burn down Samara Oblast”. But since he started drawing attention to himself with that—not to mention the phenomenal statement “you yourselves made it so that we did nothing for the people”,—we decided, out of sheer curiosity, to see where he and his team had set up their little palace-dachas.
Nikolai Ivanovich Merkushkin was the governor of Mordovia, which his clan turned into its personal property. He has now been moved to Samara Oblast, where he once again has not forgotten the business interests of his family and partners. So those are the people we decided to look into—it’s obvious that Merkushkin doesn’t register anything in his own name.
A simple review of the local press immediately tells us that the Merkushkin clan includes his son Alexei (who, incidentally, stayed on in the Mordovian government after his father left), Alexei Viktorovich Grishin, who first worked in the Mordovian government and has now become construction minister of Samara Oblast, Alexander Sergeyevich Muravyov, a deputy in Mordovia’s city assembly, and several others. Almost all these characters turned up in one place. And not in Saransk’s elite suburbs, as one might expect, but on… Rublyovka (Moscow’s ultra-elite suburban district). Well, of course—where else would people live if they’re busy protecting Russia from the Dulles Plan (a Soviet-era conspiracy theory about Western subversion)?
