Before every street protest, the same discussion comes up. - Maybe we shouldn’t go? Why take to the streets right away? After all, there are other ways to engage with the authorities and defend your rights.

Of course, you could immediately dismiss such people as cowards and regime shills, but it is far better to honestly examine these arguments and ask: are there actually any other methods available right now? Anything at all.

So let’s try to look at the situation through Putin’s eyes. He absolutely does not like the May 5 protest, held on the eve of his inauguration. He wants to ban it and channel public discontent into other outlets. From “go to court” to “why do you need politics—better focus on self-education.” Let’s examine each of these in turn.
