On August 20, Alexei Navalny was poisoned, and he remains in a coma to this day. It happened as we were returning from a trip across Siberia, where we filmed several investigative documentaries about regional politics. Today we are publishing the first one. Let’s take a trip to the country’s third-largest city—Novosibirsk. It is here, on September 13, that the main round of the fight against United Russia (the ruling party) will take place. Why? Because Novosibirsk has a very strong opposition. The party in power is not being challenged by a scattered group of lone individuals, but by the Novosibirsk 2020 coalition, formed by different political forces. They reached an agreement and united. The coalition is led by Sergey Boyko, the most popular opposition politician there; he came in second in the recent mayoral election. In other words, there is someone worth voting for here. To defeat the United Russia candidates, we need to get 122,000 people to the polls—and those people definitely exist in Novosibirsk; we can see that from turnout in previous elections. But it is not enough just to show up at the polling station: we also need to coordinate and vote together—for the strongest opposition candidate, the one who is guaranteed to beat the United Russia candidate. How do we do that? By registering on the Smart Voting website (link in profile). Before election day, we will send you the name of the candidate you should support. In many districts, the outcome of these elections will be decided by just a few dozen votes. We need to make a small effort—and we will drive United Russia out of Novosibirsk.
