So, here’s the news: now I’m a full-blown terrorist. As of yesterday, I’ve officially been added to the list of terrorists. Honestly, I wasn’t surprised in the slightest. Want to know why? Because I was surprised yesterday and the day before, when I was reading reports that some henchmen of Governor Kadyrov (a man who, officially, is a civilian official whose powers do not include commanding armed personnel, let alone arresting anyone) had abducted the wife of a federal judge in Nizhny Novgorod and dragged her barefoot through the snow while her husband frantically called the FSB (Russia’s security service), shouting: “A person is being kidnapped here.” And afterward Kadyrov himself was posting messages saying: “This entire family will end up either in prison or underground.” And I was reading all this, repeating to myself: “Damn, this can’t be real,” not least because right now they’re sending my own criminal case to court over the fact that I said to a judge: “You have completely perverted criminal law.” I only said it—I didn’t kidnap anyone, didn’t drag anyone through the snow. But there’s a criminal case. Because I’m a terrorist. You can see it in my eyes. You can hear it in my voice. So onto the list I go. Putin, with his 100-billion-ruble palace, is an honest, modest public servant. His press secretary, wearing a wristwatch worth 37 million rubles, is a truthful and worthy associate. And those in Chechnya who now quite openly kidnap, torture, and kill people are just ordinary state employees on standard government pay scales. So who else could I possibly be in this system? Only a terrorist. What is there to be surprised about? P.S. The carousel has a few photos of the people who, along with me, were declared terrorists yesterday. Just look at those savage, bloodthirsty faces 😉
