Everyone knows the feeling of helpless rage, but in some situations it becomes especially vivid. Early this morning, there was some commotion in the corridor outside my cell, and then a man started screaming in a frantic voice, clearly addressing me: “Anatolyevich! This is lawlessness! They’re torturing me mentally and physically! Complaints need to be filed!” More noise followed, and then the man fell silent. And there you are, furious and wanting to help the poor man, but unable to do anything except pound your fist against the iron cell door. An hour later, during rounds, the duty officer asks: “Any complaints, statements, suggestions?” — “Yes,” I say, “I have a statement: a man in the corridor was shouting that he was being tortured. I demand that an investigation be opened.” — “Mmm. I see. And do you have any statements?” — “That is my statement.” — “Do you have any statements concerning yourself personally?” — “I believe this does concern me personally.” I tell the operative officer: “A man in the corridor was shouting that he was being tortured.” He replies: “Well, maybe he was just joking?” It did not sound like a joke at all. I had a court hearing during the day, and for the second time now, when the court has requested video recordings, the penal colony has claimed that the footage was lost due to an emergency. The first time, they had a power surge; today, “the recording was lost during copying.” And this does nothing to inspire optimism about torture literally in the next cell. Turn the radio up louder, and you could cut a person to pieces. A “power surge” will destroy any evidence, even though there are surveillance cameras hanging everywhere. I asked my lawyers to file complaints so that an investigation would be carried out, but everything is complicated by the fact that I know nothing about the man who was shouting, except that, judging by his voice, he was an older man from the Caucasus.
